UNION SQUARE, NY — A Girl Scouts troop for girls experiencing homelessness in New York City is selling thousands of boxes of Girl Scout cookies in Union Square this week.

Girl Scout cookies will be on sale at Kellogg's NYC Café outpost, 31 E. 17th St., in Union Square 1 to 6 p.m. daily until Friday.

Last year, the girls aimed to sell 6,000 boxes — exceeding their goal by more than five times and selling more than 32,000 boxes. This spring, they aim to sell 60,000 boxes.

The cash will help raise money to continue expanding Troop 6000 — as well as teach girls business skills.

Troop 6000 first launched in February 2017, according to the Girl Scouts of Greater New York. Last summer, the troop expanded to all five boroughs across 15 homeless shelters. It now serves more than 600 girls and women.

"The impact that Troop 6000 has had on the girls and women is profound," Meridith Maskara, the CEO of the Girl Scouts of Greater New York said last summer. "Girls feel like they're not alone, that others understand them and that they belong to a much larger community and can make a difference in the world."
