The holiday market dates back to 1993, when Urbanspace also launched a market in Grand Central. Union Square's market is the first outdoor holiday market in New York, according to the company. The company today runs holiday markets at Columbus Circle, Bryant Park, and Union Square.

The market is open through Christmas Eve, Dec. 24 on the south side of Union Square Park. Its hours are Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
