Alzheimer's Association plans virtual programs in February

Long Island Chapter offers educational and social activities for general public, people with early-stage dementia and caregivers

Living with Alzheimer’s: For Early-State Caregivers will be held from 3-4:30 p.m. Wednesdays Feb. 3, 10 and 17. This program offers practical answers to the questions that arise in the early stage.

A Memory Cafe for people with early-stage dementia and their family caregivers will be held from 6-7:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4. This free musical program in honor of Valentine’s Day and Black History Month will feature Napoleon Revels-Bay playing “The Golden Drum Journey of Love, the R in B called Jazz and Doo-Wop.” This program will be accessible via Zoom or participants can call in.

Healthy Living for your Brain and Body will be held from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9. This program provides information on diet, nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement. Get hands-on tools to develop a plan for healthy aging.

10 Signs of Alzheimer’s will be held from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10. This program is for Town of North Hempstead residents only. To register for this program, please call 311. Learn about typical age-related changes, common warning signs of Alzheimer’s, how to approach someone about memory concerns; early detection, the benefits of a diagnosis and the diagnostic process and Alzheimer’s Association resources.

Caring Connections will be held from 2-3 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 10 and March 10. A free virtual social program for people in the early stage of dementia and their primary caregivers featuring a live-guided crafting activity. Social programs provide an opportunity to socialize and remain active in a safe, relaxed atmosphere. This event is in partnership with the Patchogue-Medford Library.

Understanding and Responding to Dementia-Related Behaviors will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16. Behavior is one of the primary ways people with dementia communicate their needs and feelings once the ability to lose language is lost. Learn to decode common behaviors so you can connect at every stage of the disease.

Effective Communication Strategies will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17. Get information on how communication takes place when someone has dementia. Learn to decode verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia and identify strategies to help you connect and communicate at every stage of the disease.

Reading, Writing and Reminiscing will be held from 2-3 p.m. Wednesdays from Feb. 17 through March 24. This free virtual book club for people in the early stage of dementia will feature support group-style discussions inspired by a reading of Eugenia Zukerman’s book, “Like Falling Through a Cloud.” Prescreening and registration are required in order to participate.

Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia will be held from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24. Learn about the impact of Alzheimer’s, the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s, disease stages and risk factors, current research and treatments as well as Alzheimer’s Association resources.

Learn about typical age-related changes, common warning signs of Alzheimer’s, how to approach someone about memory concerns; early detection, the benefits of a diagnosis and the diagnostic process and Alzheimer’s Association resources.
