Are You Ready for Hurricane Season in Half Hollow Hills?

Hurricane season in Half Hollow Hills has officially begun. Are you prepared?

The Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services’ Office of Emergency Management offers information to help families get ready for Hurricane Season. They provide notification programs, shelter locations, preparedness plans and weather updates.

Go to the Suffolk County website and click on “Departments” and then the “Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services” tab to access this information.

In the event of an emergency, Suffolk County has created an emergency alert systems and a free special needs registry for residents. Check them out:

• CODE RED. A high-speed emergency notification system will alert Suffolk residents via email and text message. Code RED includes a Hurricane Preparedness mapping tool that allows Suffolk emergency managers to send notifications to specific areas such as villages, townships or zip codes. Suffolk residents can register two phone numbers and one email address to receive the notifications.
• Special Needs Registry. The Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management made the Special Needs Registry into a county-wide registry for residents to include those with special and functional medical needs. This registry is voluntary and free. It will help first responders and emergency planners locate and identify those who may need extra help during or special sheltering during an emergency.

“Both the Code RED system and the Special Needs Registry greatly enhance the County’s ability to reach out and assist residents in the event of an emergency,” said Legislator Lou D’Amaro.

Sign up for Code RED and Special Needs Registry via links on the FRES webpage. Those without internet access can sign up by calling Office of Emergency Management’s Customer Service Number at (631) 852-4900, Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.

“The sooner residents prepare for a pending storm the greater the chances will be to minimize potential danger and property damage,” D’Amaro said.
