Dix Hills Library Hosts Document Shredding Day

Event will be held Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.

To help local residents prevent sensitive documents from falling into the wrong hands, the Half Hollow Hills Community Library will host a Document Shredding Day Saturday from 10 a.m to 1:30 p.m.

Suffolk County Legis. Steve Stern noted that identity theft is a serious concern and many identity thieves steal documents such as bank statements, tax returns and insurance documents from household trash to create bank accounts, use credit cards and steal from unsuspecting victims.

Local residents can bring their old papers to the library parking lot, 55 Vanderbilt Parkway in Dix Hills and watch as sensitive documents are shredded in the mobile shredding unit.  Staples, rubber bands, folders and paper clips do not need to be removed, however, plastic document covers, hanging file folders and electronic media cannot be accepted.  Shredded material will be recycled. Registration is not required.

“I urge our community to take advantage of this service offered by the Half Hollow Hills Community Library,” Stern said. “Identity theft is a growing problem and proper disposal of sensitive documents may prevent serious financial loss and aggravation.”
