Elderly Melville Couple Gets A Helping Hand With Home Cleaning

"When you're 96, yard work and housecleaning are not chores that come easy," said a PSEG Long Island employee who organized the cleanup.

Morris “Monty” Koffer and his wife Edith, an elderly couple from Melville, needed to get their home back into shape for the holidays.

In response, about 20 PSEG Long Island employees, who partnered with the Moonjumpers charitable foundation, voluntarily spent six hours cleaning the Koffer's home, filling a 20-yard dumpster with debris from the yard, basement and garage.

“When you’re 96, yard work and housecleaning are not chores that come easy,” PSEG Meter Technician Frank Moorhus, a fellow Melville resident who organized the clean up. “When I learned of Monty and Edith’s situation, I knew that my company and co-workers would step in to help. Everyone was so enthusiastic and made a real difference for this couple, which show the true spirit of giving during this holiday season!”

Monty Koffer and Moorhus, both ham radio enthusiasts, met through a mutual on-air acquaintance.

“I asked my wife – she had to pinch me because I can’t believe what I see here,”Koffer, a World War II veteran, said after seeing his clean home. “Everything is done. It’s amazing to see how they cleaned it up. They did a remarkable job. It’s beautiful. It looks like a new house. We’re very, very thankful.”
