Florida Teacher From Dix Hills Remembered At Funeral
Scott Beigel's fiance said he once made a comment on how he wanted to be remembered if he died in a school shooting, reports say.

Scott Beigel, the Dix Hills native who was killed in the deadly mass school shooting in Parkland, Florida, was remembered at his funeral on Sunday.
Beigel was a geography teacher and and cross country coach at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. He was struck by a bullet as he shut a classroom door behind him. He had unlocked his classroom briefly to let more students take shelter, the Miami Herald reported.
He was remembered by those close to him as selfless and funny with a sarcastic sense of humor, Newsday reports.

Beigel’s fiance Gwen Gossler said he once made a comment on how he wanted to be remembered if he died in a school shooting, according to the New York Post.
“Tell them what a jerk I am, don’t talk about the hero stuff,” Beigel told her, she said, the Post reports.

“OK, Scott, I did what you asked,’’ Beigel’s fiance said to the Post. “Now I can tell the truth. You are an amazingly special person. You are my first love and my soulmate.’’
Gossler and Beigel had been together for seven years, Newsday reports.
Beigel worked at Stoneman Douglas for just six months, but staff members enjoyed his company, calling him their person Jerry Seinfeld, according to Newsday.
Beigel also worked as a summer camp counselor at Camp Starlight in Pennsylvania.
"The Starlight family is wrapping their arms around each other today singing from our hearts to starlight's beloved friend and hero, Scott Beigel," the camp posted in a statement on its Facebook page.
Seventeen people were killed in the shooting last Wednesday, which authorities say was carried out by 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, a former student at the school located about 20 miles southwest of Boca Raton.
Two coaches, a teacher and 14 students were killed in the massacre, the deadliest school shooting since Sandy Hook in 2012.
