Free Prostate Cancer Screenings Offered

State Sen. Flanagan teams with Stony Brook Medicine to mark Prostate Cancer Awareness Week.

State Sen. John Flanagan and Stony Brook Medicine’s Prostate Care Program are joining forces to offer free prostate cancer screenings beginning Sept. 17. in recognition of Prostate Cancer Awareness Week.

The program, under the direction of Medical Director Howard L. Adler, will offer the screenings at Stony Brook Urology, 24 Research Way, Suite 500, in East Setauket. Screenings are available each day from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

“Prostate cancer can be beaten if found early and it is important for everyone to utilize all the available opportunities to protect their health,” said Flanagan. “This free event will provide a great resource to many men in our community.”

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in American men and is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind only lung cancer. In total, prostate cancer accounts for about nine percent of cancer-related deaths in men.  

The ACS estimates that this year more than 186,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and more than 28,000 American men will die of prostate cancer in 2012.
