Man Suffers Burns From Gas Can Explosion in Dix Hills

The can was next to a backyard fire pit; patient was air-lifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, officials say.

A man in Dix Hills suffered burns after a gas can exploded next to a backyard fire pit Thursday night, officials said.

The Dix Hills Fire Department responded to reports of the explosion on Gillette Street at about 9:40 p.m., officials said.

Firefighters arrived to find an adult male with burns from the explosion. The patient was treated by EMTs and paramedics from the Dix Hills Rescue Squad and transported by ambulance to the helicopter landing zone at the Candlewood Middle School on Carlls Straight Path.

The patient was transferred to the Suffolk Police Medivac and airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, with first and second-degree burns to his upper body, officials said.

About 35 volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel were on the scene with three engines, two ambulances, paramedic and first responder units, under the command of First Assistant Chief Tom Napolitano and Second Assistant Chief Alan Berkowitz, according to officials.
