Fire Ignites Tank Burst At Melville Sand Supplier

A fire caused the explosion on Tuesday afternoon, police say. No one was injured, police say.

MELVILLE, NY — A fire caused a tank to burst at a Melville sand and gravel supplier on Tuesday afternoon, Suffolk police said.

The blaze broke out around 12:50 p.m. at 110 Sand Company, at 136 Spagnoli Road, police said. Heavy smoke could be seen from the Long Island Expressway. No one was injured, police said.

The Melville Fire Department responded with four engines, two ladder trucks, a foam truck, four ambulances, a paramedic and fire police, according to public information officer Steve Silverman. Chief David Kaplan led the firefighters with the support of assistant chiefs Jason Bernfeld and Don Barclay.

Other fire departments that helped include Dix Hills, Plainview, Wyandanch, East Farmingdale, Huntington Manor, Geenlawn, Hicksville and Syosset, as well as the Huntington Community First Aid Squad. Suffolk police, Suffolk fire rescue coordinators, the Town of Huntington fire marshal, New York state Department of Environmental Conservation and the National Grid also helped.
