Town Proposes Renaming Dix Hills Street 'Scott J. Beigel Way'

The Dix Hills native died while protecting students during the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last month.

The Huntington Town Board will vote on Tuesday night to rename a Dix Hills street in honor of Scott Beigel, a teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who died protecting students.

Hart Way would be renamed "Scott J. Beigel Way." Beigel was born and raised in Dix Hills and his parents still live there.

The street sign will be unveiled at the 7 p.m. Town Board meeting at Huntington Town Hall, located at 100 Main St.

A candlelight vigil was held in Huntington last week in memory of Beigel.

Beigel was a geography teacher and the school's cross country coach. He was struck by a bullet as he shut a classroom door behind him. He had unlocked his classroom briefly to let more students take shelter.
