Truck Loses Brakes, Strikes 3 Vehicles On Service Road; 3 Hurt

A 9-year-old girl and her parents were hospitalized after the truck rear-ended their vehicle on Monday afternoon.

Three people, including a 9-year-old girl, were injured after a tractor-trailer lost its brakes and struck three vehicle in Melville on Monday afternoon, fire officials say.

According to fire officials, the tractor-trailer was traveling west on the North Service Road, near Round Swamp Road, when the vehicle apparently lost its brakes, causing a chain-reaction crash at 3:47 p.m. The truck first rear-ended a Jeep, injuring the young girl and her parents and causing significant damage.

The truck then continued to strike two other vehicles before coming to a stop 1,000 west on the North Service Road in Nassau County, officials say.

The family in the Jeep was taken to Huntington Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Melville Fire Department volunteers were on the scene with two ambulances, a heavy rescue truck, engine, quint, fire police, paramedic and first responder units. Units were under the direction of First Assistant Chief David Kaplan. Both Suffolk and Nassau police responded to the incident, according to PIO Steve Silverman.
