Technology is something that has become integrated into pretty much every industry we see today. Many aspects of technology have made certain business practices safer, more efficient, and easier to accomplish. When the pandemic hit on a global scale, technology started to take over in many areas, allowing for more distancing and less spread of the virus. Technology has also had a hand in enhancing things like philanthropy, and we will discuss how and why below.

Firstly, technology has made it so that people can make gifts on their own timeline, and with whatever level of anonymity that they wish. Where it used to be that some foundations would have fundraisers maybe once or twice or specific times of the year and particular locations, now donors can log on and donate to a cause whenever they want for whatever amount they feel comfortable giving. Additionally, people no longer have to attend in-person gatherings where they might experience unwanted attention or fanfare; they can easily log on, make their gift, and continue with their day.

Next, crowdfunding has become a largely popular way of raising funds, and it will only continue with the furthered use of technology. Now users can make crowdfunding campaigns for causes, and even individuals, that mean the most to them. Some of the top crowdfunding sites include ArtistShare, GoFundMe, and JustGiving. There are limited regulations on what you can raise money for and increased opportunities to spread the word for your campaign on other online platforms such as social media.

Social media itself has had a significant impact on philanthropy. There have been many examples of challenges that almost everyone can participate in and share with their friends to keep the fight going. Movements such as the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS lead to more than 100 million raised in donations. Along with this, text donations have also been a method for foundations to optimize their fundraising efforts. In 2014, people worldwide were able to text in donations to help stop the spread of the Ebola outbreak. In addition to this, text donations were also used to benefit rescue and relief efforts after the major earthquakes in Japan and Haiti.
