Winter Storm Watch Issued For Suffolk County

A winter storm watch has now been issued for Suffolk County as a powerful storm heads toward the region, the National Weather Service says. The winter storm watch will be in effect all day Thursday. All of Suffolk is now expected to see 4-8 inches of snow.

Wind gusts of 30-40 mph are possible. This may result in blowing and drifting snow.

"Plan on difficult travel conditions, including the morning and evening commute on Thursday," the storm watch says.

There is about a 1 in 10 chance of a foot of snow or more accumulating in Suffolk.

"This is a fluid situation though based on model spread, with potential for these numbers to go down, but it seems more so upwards based on model trends," the New York office of the NWS said in a forecast discussion regarding snow total estimates.

The full forecast:

Tuesday Afternoon- Sunny, with a high near 26. Wind chill values between 5 and 15. West wind 14 to 18 mph.

Tuesday Night- Clear, with a low around 11. Wind chill values between zero and 5. West wind 9 to 16 mph.

Wednesday- Sunny, with a high near 31. Wind chill values between zero and 10. West wind 6 to 9 mph becoming south in the afternoon.

Wednesday Night- Snow likely, mainly after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a steady temperature around 27. Wind chill values between 15 and 25. Light and variable wind becoming north 9 to 14 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Thursday- Snow. Steady temperature around 28. Blustery, with a northwest wind 18 to 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

Thursday Night- A 40 percent chance of snow before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 11. Blustery.

Friday- Partly sunny and cold, with a high near 15. Breezy.
