Harrison Avenue Elementary School student Ethan Piliero has been announced the winner of the 37th Senatorial District’s 2012 New York State Senate Earth Day Poster Contest.
New York State Senator Suzi Oppenheimer chose the Harrison Avenue winner from more than 80 submissions.

“Each entry from my district displayed tremendous originality and vision as well as obvious concern for the ecological future of our communities and our state,” Oppenheimer said in a statement. “I am proud of every participant and encourage them all to continue to study and learn more about the serious challenges that face our environment.”
Last year more than 20 students in HAS art teacher Christine Vitarello’s class created posters around the Earth Day theme “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.”

Vitarello’s 4th grade students competed with the many districts that comprise the 37th Senatorial District in the State of New York
“The major student learning objective for this lesson was to teach students how to communicate through design,” said Vitarello. “Students were asked to create a poster that was simple, bold and clear.”
