Purchase's Planned Senior Facility Recognized By LGBT Group

Broadview on Purchase's campus is among just 10 facilities in New York with a 2021 SAGE Care credential for work with LGBT seniors.

PURCHASE, NY — A one-of-a-kind senior living facility planned for the SUNY Purchase campus has become one of the only 10 groups in New York to receive a platinum credential from SAGE, an advocacy and services organization for LGBT elders. The developers of Broadview at the Purchase College senior living community say the certification is especially meaningful because the facility is intended to be a part of the liberal arts college rather than just being located at the school.

The project isn’t slated to open until 2023, but already, the staff has worked closely with SAGE and other LGBT groups to ensure the senior residences will be as inclusive and supportive as possible for all residents. Earning the certification from SAGE required staff and management to work with SAGE Care staff to learn about the needs of the LGBT elder population through an extensive training program.

“I commend Broadview for giving staff the tools they need to create a welcoming community for LGBT people,” SAGE Senior Director of National Projects Tim R. Johnston said in a statement announcing the certification. “We are excited to credential Broadview and continue our partnership.”

Residents of the unique senior living facility will be part of the larger Purchase College community. Those living at Broadview’s 220 independent living homes will even be allowed to attend classes with students. The facility will also offer performances as well as learning and lecture opportunities from faculty and students at the facility’s on-site classroom and exhibition spaces.

Broadview developers say making the residences as inclusive and welcoming to seniors from all walks of life is key to making the residents feel like a part of the college rather than just neighbors. To that end, the management points out that LGBT older adults face a wholly unique set of challenges.

Working with groups such as SAGE, Broadview hopes to mitigate some of these challenges, including the fact that elderly members of the LGBT community are less likely to have their own children or a supportive family structure to help them stay independent and self-sufficient. There is also evidence indicating LGBT seniors are at much higher risk of diseases like hypertension, diabetes and psychological stress.

“We are proud to receive the SAGE Care credential,” Broadview Director of Marketing Ashley Wade said of the accreditation. “We are committed to making Broadview an inclusive, safe and welcoming living environment for all residents. This certification is a testament to that commitment.”
