Harrison Home-Buying Rumors; Memorial Day Municipal Schedule

Here's the weekly column from Harrison's mayor Ron Belmont.

(Town of Harrison)

From Harrison Mayor Ron Belmont

As you may have noticed, the Avalon Bay/MTA project is underway in downtown Harrison. The project includes 143 rental units, 7 of which will be set aside for workforce housing and the remaining will be offered at fair market value. There will also be 27,000 square feet of commercial space and a parking garage for over 500 vehicles. I look forward to continuing to work with Avalon Bay as this exciting new development takes shape.

I would like to take this time to clear up some misinformation. It’s come to my attention that a purchase offer made by the town, on property located near our municipal campus, is being reported as a way to force people to move from their homes. Nothing could be further from the truth. This was a straight forward, fact-finding exercise to determine if local residents were interested in selling their property. Should anyone need further clarification on this, please feel free to call my office.

Recently, I had the great pleasure of attending an awards ceremony, held at Congregation Emmanu-El, which honored Harrison’s police personnel. I would like to extend my gratitude to Rabbi Goldsmith and Congregation Emmanu-El for hosting this very important event. Our law enforcement officers were recognized for outstanding service and it was an honor to be invited.
St. Anthony of Padua Church recently hosted a moving tribute that honored all members of the Harrison Police Department, Fire Department, Ambulance Corps and civic officials. It was a privilege to attend the 12 th annual Blue Mass. The mass was a wonderful way to pay homage to those in uniform who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, but also to show respect to those who continue to protect and serve our community.

Last weekend, residents and friends had the pleasure of sampling our local chefs’ specialties at the Library fundraiser, “A Taste of Harrison”. It was very successful and many came out to support this very worthwhile event.

I would also like to express my gratitude to all the participating restaurants for their generous contributions. A special thank you also goes out to Kris Schuck for driving the Senior van, allowing for easy and convenient transportation to the participating venues.
