Harrison Spring Spruce Up Day & Earth Hour: Mayor's Column
Plus Harrison Library's One Book One Community project in April, catching up with an HHS grad and upcoming lunches with the mayor

From the mayor and town board
It’s important to the entire Harrison community that we have clean neighborhoods and roadways. This year’s Harrison Spring Spruce Up Day will take place this Saturday, March 30. If you see a location that might be in need of a little tidying up, please notify my office so I can assign volunteers to that area. This is a wonderful opportunity, for participating in a community service project, and demonstrates a concern for our town and our environment. Everyone’s assistance is needed so please contact my office at 670-3009 if you can pitch in. I look forward to collaborating with community organizations and volunteers as we elevate our town’s appearance.
I encourage all Harrison residents to participate in this year’s Earth Hour on March 30th from 8:30 to 9:30 pm. Information about Earth Hour can be found online. The theory behind Earth Hour is that by conserving energy we can collectively work towards a sustainable future. Earth Hour is recognized worldwide and the event is held annually. Encouraging communities and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights brings awareness to this very important issue.

I would like to take this time to highlight former Harrison High School graduate Chris Cassavecca. Chris is currently an Executive Producer for News10NBC in Rochester. He graduated from Harrison High School in 2009 and spent many hours announcing the Harrison Youth Football games in the mid to late 2000’s. He also offered color commentary for the Harrison Husky Varsity basketball team for Harrison Channel 74. Chris began his career in Westchester as a producer for FiOS1 News. He then moved to Syracuse to work as a producer at WSYR in Syracuse. A year later, Chris accepted a job at News10NBC in Rochester. Chris quickly rose through the ranks at News10NBC, becoming Senior Morning Producer before accepting his new role as Executive Producer for the #1 rated Morning show in Rochester, News10NBC Today. Chris credits his experiences in Harrison, as well as his teachers, as part of his success and it gives me great pleasure to recognize his accomplishments.
The Harrison Public Library is launching its One Book One Community reading project during the month of April. This year the Library has chosen to read the thought-provoking memoir, Inheritance: Genealogy, Paternity and Love by New York Times bestselling author Dani Shapiro. The book explores topical issues surrounding genealogy, DNA testing, paternity, artificial insemination, and bioethics. The highlight of the month is the appearance of Dani Shapiro in Harrison on Monday, April 29th at 7 pm. The Harrison Public Library is partnering with the neighboring Jewish Community Center for this special author event, which is being held at the Jewish Community Center. It promises to be an extraordinary program. Books will be available for purchase.
