Snow Estimates Rise For The Hudson Valley On Super Bowl Sunday

Road conditions will be bad: Southern Westchester is under a storm warning and hazardous outlooks have been issued for the rest of the HV.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The National Weather Service upgraded its advisory on Sunday's snow to a winter storm warning for southern Westchester from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and increased its estimates of snow accumulation across the region.

Heavy snow is expected and total snow accumulations could reach 5 to 7 inches in southern Westchester as well as Long Island and portions of northeast New Jersey and southern Connecticut. Travel could be very difficult. Snowfall rates may exceed 1+ inches per hour for a period during the late morning and early afternoon.

For Orange, Putnam, Rockland and northern Westchester: Total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are expected. Roads will be slippery.

Dutchess and Ulster counties could get 3 to 5 inches of snow. Cold with highs in the upper 20s. Northeast winds around 5 mph. Chance of snow 80 percent.

Still, there is much uncertainty in how powerful the storm will be, said Alex Marra and Bill Potter at Hudson Valley Weather. "The computer guidance has been fluctuating from a stronger solution, to a weaker solution, as the models try to get a handle on the energy in the southern branch of the jet stream. The difference in the atmospheric energy is small, but the end results are noticeable."
