HHS Graduation; SPRYE; Sunflowers Fundraiser: Mayor's Column

Plus smart energy use. Did you know about 49 percent of unwanted heat comes through windows.

(Harrison Town Hall)

From Mayor Ron Belmont

I would like to take this time to recognize our local high school graduates. It’s always wonderful to see excited students and their proud parents at this very moving time of year. It was an honor to be at this year’s Harrison High School Graduation Ceremony. The strong educational foundation, that the students have received, will undoubtedly set them on the path to success.

The skills they have learned from teachers, coaches, administrators, and parents will be essential to them as they take their next step. I’m confident that they have been prepared, in the best possible way, to succeed.

Congratulations to the class of 2019!

I would like to bring your attention to SPRYE, a membership based organization designed to provide services, opportunities for social engagement and cultural enrichment to adults 60 years and older. SPRYE is available to Harrison residents, as well as other local sound shore communities, and offers an array of options for those who need extra assistance in the pursuit of independent living. With a membership, members can receive transportation to doctor’s appointments, lunches, lectures and outings to cultural events, wellness and educational programs, access to volunteers, and contact with a professional staff that can provide referrals.

Celebrate the summer with sunflowers! The Harrison Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a flower delivery fundraiser through the month of July. Stop in to Blooming Buds in downtown Harrison, by August 1 st , and fill out a form to have your fresh cut sunflowers delivered within a 3 mile radius. Deliveries will be made during the last two weeks in August.

With hot, humid weather forecasted this time of year, Con Edison is offering tips to help customers stay cool and save on their energy bills. Con Edison advises customers to set air conditioning to the highest comfortable temperature. Every degree the thermostat is lowered drives the bill up by 6 percent. When the AC is running, close doors to keep cool air in and hot air out. Even when using AC, use ceiling and other fans for additional cooling and better circulation.

Keep shades, blinds and curtains closed. About 49 percent of unwanted heat comes through windows.

Turn off AC units, lights and other appliances when not at home and use a timer or smart technology to turn the air conditioner on about a half-hour before arriving home. To reduce indoor heat and moisture, run appliances such as ovens, washing machines, dryers and dishwashers in the early morning or late at night when it’s cooler outside.

In closing, I would like to wish all residents a happy, healthy and safe Fourth of July holiday. As you celebrate with family and friends, please remember those in our Armed Forces who helped to make freedom possible.

The next “Lunch with the Mayor” is on Friday, July 12 th and I will be at the West Harrison Pool Complex located in West Harrison. I will be at this location from 12:30 to 1:30 and look forward to meeting with residents and talking about issues facing our community.
