plus see movie at Harrison Library on plastic bags; mourning a Harrison volunteer par excellence and more

(Harrison Town Hall)

From Mayor Ron Belmont

Sadly, the Town of Harrison recently lost a beloved member of our community. Lola Geiger passed away this month, at the age of 98, and is remembered by many as an integral part of many Harrison organizations. For years, Lola gave countless volunteer hours to our schools, municipal departments, the Library and to the League of Women Voters, to name just a few. She was an inspiration to us all and her imprint will be with us for years to come. I know I will certainly feel the loss but feel so fortunate to have known Lola for so long.

As an active member, I’m happy to report that Sustainable Westchester continues to grow. Sustainable Westchester is an association of local governments that promotes sustainability initiatives by sharing ideas and resources in an effort to produce a healthier and more vibrant environment. Sustainable Westchester’s mission is to improve the bottom line on energy costs for thousands of Westchester residents and small businesses. It’s exciting to be involved in this worthwhile effort and I look forward to addressing important issues affecting our community.

On a related note, NY State has passed a law banning the use of certain plastic bags. The law goes into effect on March 1, 2020. To support the state's efforts to minimize plastic waste, we ask that you begin the transition to reusable bags when shopping in Harrison. As a supportive measure, The Harrison Sustainability Committee will be screening the documentary film "Bag It" at the Harrison Public Library on January 26th @ 3pm and collecting any new re-usable bags you may not need. They will be re-distributing these bags within the community.

In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Highway Department for doing a wonderful job clearing our streets of leaf piles and brush. The Highway crews have cleared our municipal roadways, in record time, and I would like to commend them for their hard work.

Now that winter is upon us, I would like to remind residents that as snowstorms approach, please remember to put cars into driveways to help with street plowing efforts. Although we have not issued a snow emergency yet, four inches or more will allow for a snow emergency to be issued. Any snow emergency status will be listed on our town scroll so please be aware of designated snow emergency routes. In addition, please be mindful that when clearing driveways and walkways, shovelers must refrain from depositing snow into the streets.
