Jury Returns Verdict In Mysterious Case of I-95 Gunshot Victim

Passers-by cared for the bleeding man found on the side of I-95 and called police about a collision.

HARRISON, NY — A Westchester County jury has found a Bronx man guilty in the case of a gunshot victim left bleeding on I-95 in Harrison. County Court Judge Anne Minihan charged the jury Monday and they returned with a verdict Tuesday morning, Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. announced.

Specifically, the jury found Jamil Fields guilty of:

  • Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, a class B violent felony
  • Assault in the First Degree, a class B violent felony
  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a class C felony

Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 3.

On July 18, 2017, New York State Police and other emergency personnel were called to I-95 northbound in Harrison for a reported collision. North of Exit 18B they found a man on the side of the interstate being cared for by civilians. The victim had injuries including multiple gunshot wounds.

In fact, investigators found, the victim had been shot while in a U-Haul van with Arizona plates traveling northbound on I-95. He was then thrown out.

The trail, including a photo of the van on I-95, led police to Jamil Fields of the Bronx, who had rented the U-Haul van in which the victim was shot. On July 22, police found Fields, who was still in possession of the van. He was arrested.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Lana Hochheiser, Deputy Chief, Homicide Bureau, and Anne Stark of the Motions Division.
