Sidewalk Grant, Plastic Bags, Alarm Systems: Harrison Mayor

Plus info on Harrison Town Clerk Jackie Greer's extended office hours during town board meetings

(Harrison Town Hall)

From Mayor Ron Belmont

I’m happy to report that the Town/Village of Harrison received a grant from NY State to install sidewalks on Union Avenue. The Union Avenue Sidewalks Project status update is as follows: The Town is soliciting bids and interest from engineering design firms in order to select a project design consultant. Initial forms required by the NY State Department of Transportation (Grantor) are in the process being completed. The grant is reimbursable in nature, which means the Town will fund the entire project on the front end.

As I previously reported, effective March 1, 2020, NY State law will prohibit the distribution of single use plastic carryout bags by retailers. For more information on the reusable bag initiative, please visit Zero Waste Westchester on our town web page at www-harrison-ny.gov. The flyer is also available at https://tinyurl.com/shsmaqb . Frequently asked questions are posted and offer helpful tips on reducing waste.

The Harrison sustainability Committee recently hosted a viewing of the documentary film, Bag It at the Harrison Public Library. The film examines the issues around plastic bag use and looks at plastic's effects on our physical health and our environment. If you missed the film, you can now view it on our cable channel and town web site at Zero Waste Westchester.

Con Edison’s Office of Government Relations has contacted local elected officials regarding safe practices during weather related conditions. As the company monitors snow and rainstorms that affect our area, and prepares to service any problems the weather causes, they urge customers to place safety first. Most importantly, do not touch downed wires as they may be live.

Customers can report downed power lines, outages and check service restoration status at www.conEd.com or by calling 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). When reporting an outage, customers should have their Con Edison account number available, if possible, and report whether their neighbors also have lost power.

Please be reminded that if you have a burglar alarm system installed in your home or business, you must be registered. An application must be filed with the Harrison Police Department’s Alarm Bureau. There is a $75 annual fee for residents, $150 for businesses and $25 for seniors. For more information, please visit www.harrison-ny.gov or call (914) 813-7455.
