Veterans Day Parade; Commuter Lot Repaving; Food Drive

Election Day means a change in the town trash pick-up schedule, too. Here's the weekly Mayor's Column.

(Harrison Town Hall)

From Mayor Ron Belmont

The repaving project, of the Harrison commuter lot, is near completion and, so far, I am very pleased with the results. The recent, daylong precipitation our area experienced delayed the final restoration phase. The project should be completed this weekend. This upgrade is being conducted in an effort to improve pedestrian and vehicle flow thereby insuring that residents safely arrive at their destination. I thank you for your patience and appreciate your cooperation during the scope of the work detail. This type of community improvement will increase property values, attract new residents and enrich our commercial business district.

Recently, the Jewish Community Center of Harrison organized their annual food drive. During Yom Kippur, the JCC collected over 250 bags of food for donation to the Harrison Food Pantry. I was happy to be on hand as Nina Marraccini, Harrison’s Director of Community Services, received the donated food on behalf of the Pantry. The JCC’s Rabbi, Eytan Hammerman, urged the congregation that, as they skip meals on Yom Kippur, they should think of those who are hungry and most in need. The Yom Kippur food drive was designed to provide, through donations, what the congregation might have consumed during the 25-hour fast day of Yom Kippur.

For many families, a serious decline in financial stability can mean hunger. All towns have members who struggle, during hard times, and the good will of the JCC will help curb hunger in our community. Their contribution will provide the basic sustenance that some or our senior citizens, children and working families require. I would like to thank Rabbi Hammerman, and the JCC of Harrison, for this very significant contribution. For more information on our Food Pantry, please contact Nina Marraccini at 670-3026.

Veterans Day will be celebrated this year on Monday, November 11th. Our veterans have bravely served to protect our freedom and their spirit reflects a resolve to defeat any enemy and restore our country to its cherished way of life. It was this very same spirit that drove our veterans towards victory in the many wars and conflicts of the past century. Now it’s time that we all come together and honor our veterans, police, fire and emergency services.

We will do this with a parade and ceremonies to be held, on Veterans Day, in West Harrison. Line up will be at 9:30 AM on Underhill Ave. and Underhill Place and the step-off time will be at 10 AM. Parade participants include veterans groups, Harrison Police, Harrison Fire Departments, Harrison High School Marching Band, Harrison Ambulance Corps and many other civic groups that march with us each year. If you would like to join in this very important day, please feel free to contact my office.
