A Housing Works Thrift Store is returning to Brooklyn Heights this fall. Originally open for 10 years at 122 Montague Street Housing Works closed in 2017. Now two years later, the company is reopening a store down the street at 150 Montague Street much to community delight.
Housing Works is a non-profit that fights AIDS and homelessness. They currently have 13 other thrift stores and one Bookstore & Cafe. This new location will be the 14th store in NYC and the 3rd one in Brooklyn. With the trend of many independent stores and other thrift stores closing in NYC, it is refreshing to see this company expanding its outposts.
Along with powerful advocacy, Housing Works offers many services to those in need including healthcare, housing, legal services, and a work placement program called Ready for Work. Housing Works does a lot more than sell clothes. Housing Works also promotes sustainability in the fashion industry by reselling donated clothing and goods as well as partnering with DonateNYC. Housing Works hosts an array of events throughout their locations highlighting their outreach.
Reopening in DUMBO- Brooklyn Heights will provide many benefits to the community, offer resources to anyone in need while promoting sustainable shopping in the neighborhood.
