DUMBO, BROOKLYN — Residents from several addresses on the Dumbo waterfront were evacuated Wednesday morning after a contractor struck a gas main near John and Jay streets, FDNY officials said.

FDNY were first called to the intersection around 7:44 a.m., where they heard there was a gas leak. When they got there, responders discovered that a contractor had struck a gas main.

The fleet of firetrucks, which residents said lined up for a few blocks, stayed on the scene for over an hour. The leak was resolved by about 9:30 a.m., an FDNY spokesman said.

A large building that takes up 123 to 139 Plymouth Street was evacuated while the crews dealt with the incident. One resident, who asked not to be named, said firefighters came into the building banging on doors and told tenants to exit onto Plymouth Street, not John Street, which borders the building to the north.

The addresses are all found in a large building that sits between Adams Street and Pearl Street.
