Hunting With Jake's Atlantic Ave Storefront To Close Sunday
The home goods and jewelry store at 380 Atlantic Ave. announced they'll close their physical store and focus on online sales.

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY — Hunting With Jake, which sells a mix of vintage and new home goods, plans to shut down their Atlantic Avenue location after nearly four years in business to focus on online sales, its owners announced earlier this month.
The owners of the 380 Atlantic Ave. spot announced on Jan. 6 they plan to shutter the spot on Sunday but still sell vintage and antique items online along with South African beadwork.
"Broadly speaking we don’t shop the way we used," co-owner Drew Riley told Patch. "We shop online a lot more, myself including.

"The expectations of this type of business just have to change before they’re going to have an opportunity again to thrive," he added.
Hunting With Jake opened their Atlantic Avenue storefront in 2014 selling a mix of antiques along with new furniture, jewelry, home goods and more from local designers, according to their site.

However, sales have started to climb down recently and the owners couldn't afford to pay the rent anymore, said Riley. Even after their landlord offered to lower the monthly payments, the store didn't have enough money to stay afloat.
"It’s hard to meet the overhead giving what we’re seeing in trends in sales," said Riley. "We're going to stay online and see how things go."
Riley said they'll work on retooling the site after the closing and focus more on vintage items and the South African art. They hope to be able to reopen a physical location sometime in the future but think the trend to online shopping will start to force more spaces to close in the city.
"This sort of trend in retail has been on the horizon and things happen in New York first," said Riley. "I’m sure we’ll hear more story like this as time marches on."
The space is the second business in the neighborhood on Atlantic Avenue to announce they would close down this month. Owners of A Cook's Companion, at 197 Atlantic Ave., said they plan to close in February after nearly 20 years so they can spend more time with family.
