DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — Gage & Tollner's new owners plan to restore the historic Brooklyn eatery to its former glory, according to plans filed this week with the Landmarks Preservation Commission this week.
Owners Sohui Kim and Ben Schneider, of Brooklyn eateries Good Fork and Insa, presented renovation plans Tuesday that showcase both the history and the future of the iconic restaurant at 372-374 Fulton St., city records show.
The landmarked building that housed Gage & Tollner from 1892 until 2004 has since housed an Arby's, a TGI Fridays and a discount jewelry store, according to presentation materials. The steakhouse, once a favorite of Truman Capote and Mae West, is slated to open later this year, thanks to a $400,000 crowdfunding campaign to save the restaurant.

Kim and Schneider plan to preserve original many of the original details — such as the Lincrusta wall covering, brass chandeliers and coat hooks — but will make alterations to the ceiling and wall finishes, extend the bar installed in the 1990s and install new banquettes, Brownstoner was first to report.
