Reported Smoke In BK-Manhattan Tunnel Snarls 2 And 3 Trains: MTA

The 2 and 3 trains stopped running between the boroughs Thursday afternoon so officials could investigate smoke in the tunnel, the MTA said.

NEW YORK, NY — Trains on the 2 and 3 lines briefly stopped running between Brooklyn and Manhattan on Thursday afternoon as the MTA investigated smoke in the tunnel between the boroughs.

The transit officials announced just after 1 p.m. that they were investigating reports of smoke in the tunnel between Brooklyn and Manhattan, which connects Brooklyn Heights and the Financial District.

Fire officials said they were called after there was an odor in the tunnel, but discovered when they got there that there was no fire, an FDNY spokesperson said. They had wrapped up the investigation by 1:45 p.m.

The investigation caused multiple delays and briefly stopped 2 and 3 service between the boroughs in both directions.

Around 1:15 p.m., the MTA said they were using other subway lines to continue running some of the trains.

Northbound 2 trains ran on the 5 line from Nevins St to 149 St-Grand Concourse, and northbound 3 trains are holding in stations in Brooklyn. Southbound 2 and 3 trains are running on the 1 line from Chambers St to South Ferry, the last stop, the MTA said in a Tweet.

The 2 and 3 train issues came after a host of subway delays on Thursday morning, including a suspicious package at Grand Central and emergency responders tending to a passenger in Manhattan. The 42nd Street station package was deemed safe after trains skipped the station during the investigation.

6, E, F, J, 4, 5 and 7 trains also had delays for various reasons throughout the morning commute.
