Car Crash In Nassau Leads To Gas Leak And Home Evacuations
Police evacuated multiple homes in the early morning hours due to a gas leak caused by a car crash.
BETHPAGE, NY — A car crash caused a gas leak which forced multiple homes to be evacuated early Tuesday morning, police said.
According to police, just before 1 a.m., officers on patrol found a gray 2020 Subaru Rx that had struck a utility pole at Central Park Avenue and Hicksville Road. The officers managed to remove the driver safely. However, the officers smelled natural gas at the scene and began to evacuate the immediate area, and also notified National Grid and PSEG Long Island. National Grid determined the situation required a specialized unit to fix.
Officers began evacuating more homes in a larger area for safety. They also notified the Red Cross, who came to the scene to assist with the evacuation and help the families.

National Grid shut off the gas line around 4:20 a.m. Families were allowed to return to their homes as repairs are being made.
