HICKSVILLE, NY — A hazardous materials team was sent to a gym in Hicksville over the weekend and found potentially deadly levels of carbon monoxide, officials said. The Hicksville Volunteer Fire Department was called around 5:15 a.m. Sunday when an automatic fire alarm sounded at New York Sports Clubs on Duffy Avenue.

Crews scoured the building and found carbon monoxide levels at 380 parts per million when they opened a door to a third-floor pool area. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said health effects of carbon monoxide depend on how concentrated it is and how long people are exposed to it, as well as the overall health of the person breathing in it. People can become disoriented or fall unconscious at sustained concentrations above 150 to 200 ppm. Death is also possible.

The Westbury Fire Department was called to the scene with an engine. The Jericho and Syosset Fire Departments were also called for ladder trucks.

A hazmat team suited up and entered the pool area, finding a malfunctioning pool heater that lead to the elevated carbon monoxide levels, officials said. Crews ventilated the pool with mechanical fans and isolated the pool area.

The building was closed at the time and no one was hurt. The scene was turned over to the Nassau County Fire Marshals hazmat officers.
