Fourth grade students in Mrs. Wiertz’s class at Dutch Lane Elementary School traveled all the way to Omaha, Nebraska via Zoom. Students had the opportunity to sit in on a virtual field trip with the Henry Doorly Zoo. The fourth graders met some of the animals who live at the zoo, while learning what humans can do to keep those animals safe. With summer around the corner, students learned about looking for “reef safe” sunscreen to help keep marine ecosystems healthy. They also discussed how recycling and cutting plastic rings from packaging can keep plastic and trash out of the ocean. Prior to the field trip, Mrs. Wiertz’s class conducted research about ocean animals and created a brochure to summarize their findings. The virtual field trip served as a culminating activity to further explore ocean animals and how humans can contribute to ensuring their safety and health. The Henry Doorly Zoo is home to the largest aquarium within a zoo in the world. This program was made possible through Hicksville's partnership with Nassau BOCES' Videoconferencing Services. The virtual field trip was a way to engage students and deepen their understanding, despite the constraints of the pandemic.
