Buildings within Hicksville Public Schools are participating in activities and lessons to celebrate autism awareness and acceptance.  At Lee Avenue Elementary School, all classroom teachers showed a TEDx Talks video to their students titled, “We Are All Different and That’s Awesome!” After watching the video, classes discussed and wrote down things that make them unique on puzzle piece cut-outs. The decorated puzzle pieces were hung in classrooms and on a bulletin board in the lobby of Lee Avenue. Remote students also participated from home.  Teachers at Woodland Elementary School are also involving students in autism awareness activities. Special education teachers Ms. Dollinger and Ms. Tallon have been virtually reading stories that teach about autism to general education classes. After the stories, students have the opportunity to ask questions and hold discussions. Ms. Dollinger and Ms. Tallon gave classes puzzle pieces to decorate with messages that promote kindness and embrace differences. The puzzle pieces were displayed in the shape of a heart for Autism Awareness Month. Students at Lee Avenue decorated puzzle pieces to be displayed at the school.
