HICKSVILLE, NY — Students of the Hicksville School District plan to step up to a kindness challenge to practice kindness at home, in school and in the community over a three-week period, district officials said.

The challenge kicks off at the start of winter recess on Feb. 15, just in time for Feb. 17 to celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day on Feb. 17. It culminates in Chalk the Walk with Kindness, a chalk drawing event, on March 7 at Broadway Commons Mall.

As part of the challenge, elementary school students will begin practicing kindness at home over winter break, and they will continue on with the practice in their schools and in the community until March 5. They will track their acts of kindness on a Kindness Challenge 15-square card and the completed cards can be used as an entry ticket to Chalk the Walk with Kindness.

As parts of the event, students and their families will be provided with chalk and they will be assigned a parking space on which to draw a design illustrating kindness. Students will also be creating cards to thank police officers, firefighters, and PSEG workers who will be invited to attend the event.

The chalk drawings will be judged by the mall’s senior marketing and business development director and staff. Gift card prizes will be awarded in four age group categories.
