HICKSVILLE, NY — Two days after Pier 1 announced it would shutter hundreds of stores, another major retailer announced mass closures that affect stores on Long Island. Macy's announced it will close at least 28 stores in the next couple months, according to local media reports. The closures include a Macy's in Hicksville and another in Commack.

Macy's spokesperson Bridget Betances confirmed the locations were closing.

"Macy’s previously shared this information with our valued colleagues," Betances said. "The decision to close a store is always a difficult one, but Macy's is proud to have served the Hicksville community over the past 64 years and the Commack community over the past 39 years."

There will be a clearance sale at the Hicksville store that will start this month and continue for about three months, Betances said in an email to Patch.

The chain plans to shutter the Commack store this summer because its lease is being terminated by the landlord. A clearance sale is slated for May and it will run about two months.

The Hicksville store is located in the Broadway Mall and the Commack store is located at 2 Veterans Memorial Highway.

Nearby Macy's stores will remain open, at Roosevelt Field, the Walt Whitman Mall, in Massapequa, Bay Shore, Smith Haven and Manhasset.

The company told USA Today in a statement Tuesday it regularly reviews its store portfolio and would provide an update at its "Investor Day" Feb. 5.

In August 2016, Macy’s said it would close 100 stores. Since that announcement, the retail chain has closed locations as the leases expire. However, when reached by Business Insider, a Macy’s representative did not comment on whether the latest stores were part of its planned closures from 2016.

Macy's is part of a growing list of brick-and-mortar establishments that have been decimated by the emergence of e-commerce companies like Amazon.
