Nassau BOCES School Closes For 2 Weeks Due To Coronavirus Case

HICKSVILLE, NY — A Hicksville school has closed and shifted to remote learning for two weeks after a staff member tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

The Nassau County Department of Health recommended that Willet Avenue School remain closed for two weeks, according to an alert posted on the website for the Board of Cooperative Educational Services of Nassau County, or BOCES. Students are remote learning through Friday, Oct. 2. In-person learning will resume Monday, Oct. 5.

The infected staff member must self-quarantine, superintendent Robert Dillon told the community in a letter Monday. The health department is conducting contact tracing. BOCES has identified students and staff thought to have been in close contact with the staff member. They have been notified and must self-isolate for two weeks.

"Anyone who needs to be quarantined has already been notified and may receive follow-up communications from the Department of Health," the website alert said. "Staff members and students should monitor for symptoms and seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms."

All other Nassau BOCES programs remain open. All affected areas in the Willet Avenue School building were deep-cleaned and disinfected Monday, the superintendent said.

School districts across Long Island have seen positive coronavirus tests in the opening days and weeks of the new school year, including Port Washington, Seaford, Syosset, Oyster Bay, New Hyde Park, Great Neck and Plainview.
