Winter Storm Warning Issued For Nassau County

BREAKING: If you must travel Thursday, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

The National Weather Service has now issued a winter storm warning for Nassau County as a paralyzing storm gets set to lash the region with heavy snow and damaging winds.

Total snow accumulations of 5-8 inches with localized amounts up to 10 inches are expected in Nassau. Suffolk County will likely see even more snow.

The winter storm warning will be in effect from 1 a.m. Thursday until 1 a.m. Friday.

Winds gusting as high as 50 mph will cause blowing and drifting snow that could make travel nearly impossible.

The full forecast:

Wednesday Night- Snow, mainly after 3am. Low around 23. Wind chill values between 15 and 20. Southeast wind 5 to 11 mph becoming north after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Thursday- Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Areas of blowing snow. Steady temperature around 26. Wind chill values between 10 and 15. Windy, with a north wind 21 to 26 mph increasing to 27 to 32 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible.

Thursday Night- A 40 percent chance of snow, mainly before 9pm. Areas of blowing snow before 9pm. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 11. Wind chill values between -5 and 5. Windy, with a west wind 22 to 29 mph, with gusts as high as 41 mph.

Friday- Mostly sunny and cold, with a steady temperature around 12. Wind chill values between -5 and -10. Breezy, with a west wind 22 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph.

Friday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 4. Breezy, with a west wind 20 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph.

Saturday- Mostly sunny and cold, with a high near 12.
