Company Looking To Add More Volunteers To Help Seniors

Umbrella, a company that connects providers to help seniors with everyday tasks, is looking volunteers to help during the coronavirus.

LONG ISLAND, NY — A company which provides services to seniors will be looking to enlist thousands of volunteers to help during the coronavirus pandemic this week. The organization, Umbrella, recently announced that Friday, April 17 will be "Shop for Seniors" Day. The day will aim to enlist thousands of volunteers to pick up groceries or medications for seniors on their own trip to the store.

Umbrella is looking to double its already 3,000 volunteers to fill a growing waiting list of orders in New York and New Jersey, two of the hardest hit states in the country.

The company normally works to connects providers with seniors in the community who need help around the house. However, in response to the coronavirus outbreak, Umbrella waived its annual membership fee and transitioned its business over to a volunteer platform that connects seniors isolated in their homes with local volunteers to deliver the groceries and essentials they need.

"I am so grateful to the volunteers who are willing to take a little extra time during their day to help me stay safe," Bernadine Peters, a resident of Westbury said. "They really are everyday angels."
