Earth Day Poster Contest Winners Recognized For Creativity

Six students were selected out of 130 entries.

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and Councilman John C. Cochrane Jr. recognized 6 students for their winning posters, submitted to the Town of Islip DEC Virtual Earth Day Poster Contest. The contest was sponsored by COVANTA. More than 130 entries were received.

First Place winners, Angelena Smith, East Islip Middle School and Andrea Perla, Oak Park Elementary School received Nook Tablets; 2nd Place winners Aiden James, Sherwood Elementary School and Nicolas Castanzo Perez, Andrew T. Morrow Elementary School received a $75 Barnes and Noble gift cards; 3rd Place winners Amber Reyes, West Middle School and Avery Gelling, Helen B. Duffield Elementary School received $50 Barnes and Noble gift cards. All of the winners will have their posters displayed in the Town of Islip Recycling Center. Each of the schools with First Place winners received a $250 Barnes and Noble gift card.

“I commend not only the contest winners, but all the teachers and schools that asked their students to participate in the poster contest,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “The amount of research and creativity students put into their posters to teach others about the benefits of recycling on our planet is a job well done,” she added.

Joining the Supervisor were DEC Commissioner Marty Bellew; Islip Town Recycling Educator, Danielle Wynn; Maureen Early, COVANTA, Community Affairs; and Steve Johnson, Facility Manager, MacArthur COVANTA.
