Islip Superintendent Announces Retirement
Ellen Semel, who has worked as superintendent of the Islip School District for 15 years, announced she will be retiring next year.
ISLIP, NY — Islip Superintendent Ellen Semel stated she will be retiring next year after holding the position for the past 15 years.
Semel announced her retirement at a board of education meeting held last Tuesday. Her retirement will begin June 30, 2021.
"On behalf of all of us on the Board and in the Islip school community, I want to thank Dr. Semel for the enormous contributions she has made over the past 15 years," Board of Education President Philip Dineen stated during the meeting. "Throughout her tenure, Dr. Semel has shown a true dedication and commitment to the success of our students, school district, and community."

Dineen also stated that the board of education will be meeting in the coming weeks to discuss the next steps to search for a new superintendent of schools.
However, school officials say that the focus now will remain on the continued reopening of schools along with the health of students and staff members during the pandemic.
