The new coronavirus has changed life for all of us. Local businesses have taken a huge economic hit, but communities are finding creative ways to support the establishments they know and love.

In an effort to help local businesses in our communities stay connected and succeed, Patch will be shining a light on some of them through a series of Q&A articles during this time.

Heit Fitness is one of the businesses in town facing struggles during the coronavirus. You can lend your support by reading more about Jamie Heit's company, below, and by contacting her here.

Tell us about your business and its history in your town.

I started my business in 2012. I left a career in teaching to pursue my passion for fitness. I conducted sessions in clients' homes only until 2019. In 2019 I bought a house, built a private gym in it, and began seeing clients in my gym as well. My business typically focuses on fitness for women, but I do train some men as well.

How has the new coronavirus impacted your business and its employees?

I don't have employees. It is only me. I have managed to get a small amount of clients training virtually with me. However most of my clients understandably want only in-person sessions. It has cut my business to less than a third of what it was. My husband is a private tutor for SAT/ACT/GRE. His business has been cut even more than mine.

How can local customers support you now and in the future?

If they are interested in virtual sessions they can contact me and I will provide the first session free. If they are not interested or can't do any training at this time they can follow me on Instagram and Facebook at @Heit_fitness and like, comment and share! I've been posting some free workout content.

Do you have any words of encouragement for your community?

Hang in there. This too shall pass. As much of a mess as this has been, please try to think of the positives. There is less pollution, people are able to spend quality time with their families, the human race is displaying such empathy, and even though we cannot be connected in person, we are more connected now than ever. People are also gaining an appreciation for nature, living day-by-day and appreciating being present. I think a lot of people will come out of this changed in a positive way with a new appreciation for the little things. It has been amazing to see our essential workers really step up to the plate and risk their lives for the cause. A big thank you to all of you!

Are you offering any special services, promotions or hours during this time?

I am offering a free first time virtual trial session. I am also offering free workout content on my social media.

Are there any other outstanding businesses in town you think deserve some community support?

I just moved to the area not too long ago so I can't think of specific places. But I would say frequent your local restaurants for take out! If you can, keep paying your dues to small private gyms even though they are closed. This way they'll be able to re-open. Also if you need any tutoring, my husband, David Gevirtz, can be contacted at Dgevirtz@yahoo.com.
