TOWN OF ISLIP, NY — A Central Islip High School senior recently featured on the cover of Time magazine was honored by Town of Islip officials for sharing her story.
Earlier this month, Islip Terrace resident Twyla Joseph was featured in the article titled "Applying to College Was Never Easy for Most Students. The Pandemic Made It Nearly Impossible."
In the story, the 17-year-old highlighted her past year as she navigated high school and the process of applying to college after the coronavirus pandemic hit Long Island in March 2020.

The town stated that Joseph's story reflected the struggles of millions of young students throughout the past year and decided to honor her with a Certificate of Recognition.
"Twyla has become an inspiration for so many. It's been a tough year for everyone, and certainly for students of all ages," Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter said. "I am so delighted Twyla was able to be here with us and share this exciting news."

Time was introduced to Twyla through her volunteer work with the non-profit group, Make the Road Action, which advocates for justice in education, immigration, and the criminal justice system. She submitted her applications to several colleges and is still waiting to hear back.
"The story that I share is the story of many people, especially students in my community, who also had to go through this during the pandemic," she said.
