Man Dies After Drowning Near Fishing Pier At Captree State Park

Officials think the 54-year-old fell in the water while trying to retrieve a crab net.

CAPTREE STATE PARK, NY - A Mineola man died after he was rescued from the water near a fishing pier at Captree State Park early Wednesday, according to state park officials.

Sheng Liu, 54, was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Medical Hospital in West Islip about an hour after State Park Police received a call at 1:11 a.m. of a man in the water.

U.S. Coast Guard and Suffolk County rescue boats were also dispatched.

Coast Guard found Liu in the water, brought him aboard and performed CPR. Once ashore, he was taken by West Islip Ambulance to the hospital, where he later died.

Officials believe he may have entered the water to try and retrieve a crab net after a line came free.

The case remains under investigation by State Parks Police detectives. Potential witnesses to the incident are asked to call Parks Police at 631.321.3700.
