Town Of Islip Animal Shelter Moving To New Location

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY - The Town of Islip animal shelter is expecting to move to a new space by next year. Last month, officials broke ground on the location of the future state-of-the-art shelter in Central Islip. The shelter, currently located on S. Denver Avenue in Bay Shore, plans to relocate to a 17,000 square-foot building about 5 miles away on Carleton Avenue.

The new shelter will include an on-site surgical room and twice as many viewing rooms. In addition, the new space will offer nearly 20 percent more kennels, new HVAC, separate entrances for staff and animals, ample visitor parking, energy efficient lighting and administrative office space. There will also be separate entrances and exits for animal control officers. Construction of the new shelter is expected to be completed by fall 2020.

"I commend our DEC Commissioner, Martin Bellew and his predecessor, James Heil, for their foresight, and for working diligently to make this vision a reality," Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter said during the recent groundbreaking. "Our new animal shelter will offer animals modern comfort and care until they find their forever homes."

Islip Town Councilman John Cochrane; Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen; Islip Planning Commissioner Ron Meyer; Deputy Commissioner Michelle Bassen; Senator Phil Boyle; DPW Commissioner Tom Owens; Deputy DEC Commissioner, Greg Hancock; Shelter Supervisor, Teri Giacalone, and members of the Trap Neuter Release program also attended the groundbreaking.
