Man Kills Himself Jumping From Top Floor Of Queens Center Mall

The suicidal man fell three floors down inside the Elmhurst mall on New Year's Day and later died in a nearby hospital, police say.

ELMHURST, QUEENS -- A suicidal man who jumped from the top floor of the Queens Center Mall on New Year's Day has died in a nearby hospital.

The 45-year-old man leapt from the third-floor ledge in front of a Macy's inside the Elmhurst shopping center at around 7:45 p.m. on Monday, police told Patch. He landed in front of a Gap store on the first floor of the mall on Queens Boulevard.

Medics rushed the man in critical condition to Elmhurst Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after at around 8:30 p.m.

A spokeswoman for the NYPD's 110th precinct declined to identify the man, but said he had no prior police record.

This isn't the first suicidal jumper seen inside Queens Center Mall.

In a nearly identical scenario in February 2013, a 28-year-old man leapt to his death from the mall's third floor and landed in front of a Baby Gap Store, the New York Daily News reported. Mary Lovelace, 55, also made a fatal 60-foot jump inside the mall in April 2009, landing on a teen sitting in a massage chair, according to the Daily News.
