NYPD Sergeant Arrested For Assaulting His Wife In Queens Home

The off-duty sergeant punched and choked his wife during an argument, police say.

ELMHURST, QUEENS -- An off-duty NYPD sergeant was arrested after allegedly punching and choking his wife during an argument in their Queens home on Monday night.

Edel Sanchez, 39, was cuffed at around 7:50 p.m. for battering his wife after the dispute turned physical. He allegedly punched his wife in the stomach, grabbed her by the arms and threw her onto a bed, police told Patch.

The 13-year veteran of the NYPD's transit division then choked his wife from behind until she had trouble breathing, an NYPD spokeswoman said.

Sanchez, who lives inside the 110th Precinct, was arrested on charges of strangulation, assault and harassment, police said. His wife suffered bruising on her wrists from the attack but didn't require hospitalization, officials said.

Records show Sanchez made $86,768 last year.
