Student Safety & Anti-Bullying Technology Conf Held in Queens
Principals, guidance counselors and administrators recently gathered at Student Safety & Anti-Bullying Technology Conference in Queens.
Queens, NY; December 19, 2017 – School bullying and cyberbullying remain serious challenges for New York City and schools across the nation. Bullying often results in students feeling isolated and, in some cases, may lead to student violence and, tragically, suicide. Schools must address the issues responsibly and need to understand the details to remain in compliance with existing rules and laws, including The Dignity Act, otherwise known as the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA), New York State’s Anti-Bullying Law.
At the Student Safety and Anti-Bullying Technology Conference, experts presented for school administrators and guidance professionals in New York City. Queens Borough President Melinda Katz addressed the conference attendees about student safety and bullying.
“We are continuing to see tragic and violent cases of bullying in New York City and across the surrounding region,” said Mike Richez of OSC World, an education technology expert and presenter at the conference. “It was clear from the administrators and guidance professionals who were at the conference that they need tools and strategies now to more effectively respond and manage incidents. They also want technology that will stop bullying and cyberbullying immediately.”

At the conference, the latest anti-bullying technology was demonstrated by Derek Peterson, CEO of Digital Fly. This included a new solution from Digital Fly called Fly Sense, which has garnered national attention for its ability to detect and help prevent bullying as well as vaping in bathrooms and other isolated areas of schools. Mr. Peterson also introduced Glue Board, a bullying prevention and anonymous reporting tool via mobile app which includes an incident management system for school administrators. This technology is similar to what the New York City Department of Education announced it was planning to release in 2018. Glue Board is available now and allows for bullying incidents to be more rapidly and efficiently managed as parents and students can anonymously report incidents of bullying or other inappropriate behavior. Fly Sights, a groundbreaking social media awareness software system that notifies school officials of potential cyberbullying and students struggling with thoughts of suicide or substance abuse was also demonstrated.
“Technology is a critical tool for reducing bullying and cyberbullying incidents in schools and when students are on social media,” said Mr. Peterson. “Administrators and guidance counselors saw tremendous value in the information we provided as well as the new technology that they can use to prevent and more effectively manage occurrences of bullying.”

He was joined by Hank Hardy, Director of Guidance and DASA Coordinator for the Port Washington Union Free School District, who spoke about implementing DASA within school districts.
