JAMAICA, QUEENS — A Queens street has a new name in honor of Jamaica Muslim Center.

The stretch of 168th St. from Highland Ave. to Gothic Drive in Jamaica will now be known as "JMC Way" in honor of the Jamaica Muslim Center, thanks to an effort spearheaded by City Council Member Rory Lancman, who represents parts of Jamaica.

Siddiqur Rahman, president of the Jamaica Muslim Center, and Lancman debuted the street sign Friday, shortly after a terrorist attack at two mosques in New Zealand left 49 dead. The street renaming plans were already in place before the attack happened on March 15.

"We are here today not just to celebrate but to send a message: that the Muslim community is part of the NYC family," Lancman said.

Jamaica Muslim Center is a nonprofit founded in 1976 that is dedicated to youth education. The center, located at 85-37 168th St., is also home to a mosque.
