Van Hits, Kills 70-Year-Old Queens Woman: NYPD

The driver was arrested after crashing his van into the woman when she tried to cross Liberty Avenue, police say.

RICHMOND HILL, QUEENS -- A 70-year-old Queens woman has died a day after being run down by a van while trying to cross the street, police said.

Toolia Rambarose was crossing Liberty Avenue near 135th Street about a mile from her Richmond Hill home when a Ford van barreled into her on Feb. 7 at around 6:14 p.m., cops said.

The van's driver, Kazim Mohammed, had been traveling north on 135th Street and hit Rambarose while trying to make a left turn onto Liberty Avenue, according to a preliminary investigation into the crash.

Medics rushed Rambarose to Jamaica Medical Center in critical condition after police found her sprawled out in the roadway unconscious, authorities said. She succumbed to her injuries in the hospital a day later.

Mohammed, 47, was arrested on scene and charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care, police said.
