Callahans Beach In Fort Salonga Closed To Swimming
A high level of bacteria was detected in the waters of the beach.
FORT SALONGA, NY - Callahans Beach in Fort Salonga is closed to bathing due to high levels of bacteria being detected. The Suffolk County Commissioner's office announced the closure on Monday. It will stay closed until repeat testing shows acceptable levels of bacteria.
According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. Gregson Pigott, "bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat."
Residents can check for updates on closed beaches by calling the Suffolk County hotline at 631-852-5822.

Callahans Beach is located on the Town of Smithtown side of Fort Salonga. Valley Grove Beach in Eatons Neck remains closed.
